A new role playing game by someone named Monte Cook?
Well for all of you neo-phytes who do not know who Monte Cook is, you can just click the above link and find out! For everyone else, let’s just continue shall we.
Monte has just brought out a new role playing game. But this isn’t just any old role playing game, and no, it’s not just more of the same old stuff. The name of the game is called Ptolus.
First, let’s start with pronunciation….
Ptolus is “TAW-luss,” although “TOL-us” seems to be a popular alternate.
Okay, now that we have taken care of that, why am I talking about this game you ask? Well, actually this game was being talked about several months back at the 2006 Gencon event held in Indianapolis, Indiana. And why were they talking about this new role playing game?
First, Ptolus is an all inclusive pkg. It costs $120.00. It comes with everything! Okay, what do I mean by everything……
Ptolus is a large book with 672 pages and all in color. The book includes the following…..
( taken from the FAQ from Ptolus )
1. A 672-page hardcover, full-color book that includes:
- A textured, embossed cover by Chesley-Award-winning artist Todd Lockwood.
- Three bound-in fabric bookmarks and four perforated cardstock bookmarks to facilitate use in play.
- An entire city described in loving detail, including descriptions of the dungeons beneath the city and within and atop the Spire.
- Extensive advice about running an urban fantasy campaign.
- More than enough adventure material to run an entire campaign.
- More than 50 pages of maps by cartographer Ed Bourelle.
- More than 350 illustrations by artists like Jason Engle, The Forge Studios (Maciej Zagórski and Pawel Dobosz), Michael Komarck, Eric Lofgren, Howard Lyon, and Michael Phillippi.
2. A double sided, full-color poster map of the city and the Spire by Ed Bourelle.
3. A package of 16 black-and-white and 8 full-color loose sheets to be used as player aids, DM aids, and adventure handouts.
4. A CD-ROM inserted in a glued-in envelope at the back of the book along with the poster and handouts. The CD includes the following:
- Complete PDF editions of both The Banewarrens and Chaositech, two Ptolus-based Malhavoc Press products.
- A PDF edition of the entirely new Ptolus adventure, The Night of Dissolution.
- A 32-page Player’s Guide to Ptolus, designed to be used by players in the setting rather than the DM, and written from their perspective.
- A detailed 32-page conversion guide for fans of Monte Cook’s Arcana Evolved.
- Handouts (printer-friendly versions) and bonus graphics
- Ptolus Campaign Journals 1 and 2
- Saga of the Blade Short Fiction (from Game Trade Magazine)
- Ptolus: City by the Spire Comic Book #1: The Allure if a Sword (from DBPro)
- Korben Trollone’s Office Adventure Map (from SkeletonKey Games)
- Miniatures Mini-Gallery (from Paizo Publishing)
- This Week in Ptolus
- Searchable Index
- Expanded Table of Contents
- Bookmarks (printer-friendly versions)
- Full Ptolus Map Key
- E-Book Coupon (from DriveThruRPG.com)
- Overall, an additional 700+ pages of adventure, source, and reference material.
And as if this weren’t enough, don’t like the idea of dragging around a 600 plus page book around with you, Ptolus will also be distributed in a PDF format available thru
“www. Drive Thru RPG. Com ” as nine different Pdf files. that will comprise the entiriety of the Ptolus book, with alot of freebies available on the Monte Cooke website.
With just a ton of support from third party publishers, Monte Cook’s Ptolus campaign will keep rpg geeks salivating for many moons to come.
If your looking for new places to find & explore, set your wandering eye on the city of Ptolus and find your place there.
Dreamblade to limited for my liking.
September 12, 2006 at 9:29 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentWell, I gave this game a fair chance and for me anyway, it is just a dud. The play field is too limited, which means you always wind up with the same ( and only type ) of strategy, while trying to kill your oppoanent’s army of figures and scoring points to win a round. While different figures and the chance roll of the dice can influence the game outcome somewhat, this is not enough incentive in my opinion to pluckdown a substantial amount of cash to purchase this turkey from Wizards of the Coast. I’ll stick to the D&D Mini’s thank you.
Wizards of the Coast Launches ” DreamBlade ” Miniatures game.
September 7, 2006 at 1:30 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentWizards of the Coast has released it’s Dreamblade miniatures game. I have it and have playtested it, but I will hold judgement till I have played it a little more. The figures are well done, and are generally larger than the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons miniatures.
Wizards as always are standing tall behind their newest product with alot of cash and prizes for the taking at their Premier Tournament Events.
So far there have been three events….
The Gencon $1k constructed Warbands.
The Gencon $20k Top 8 Warbands, also held at Gencon
The Dragon Con $10K Tournament
The next event is being held on Oct 14th-16 in Chicago and is a $10K event.
Video Game Wars! Let the Delays Begin
September 7, 2006 at 1:12 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentOkay, well the first bit of significant news to talk about is the report that Sony’s PS3 will ship about 75% less units in the USA and Japan, and while it is still slated to launch on November 17th in the US and on November 11th in Japan, it will not launch till 2007 in Europe. Is the responsible culprit………..Bluray? Yes according to Ken Kutaragi,Sony Computer Entertainment President, who says that due to this problem with Bluray production, PS3 will launch with a reduction of almost a million units.
If you have been following the console wars over the past several years, you know that this is really not anything new. If anything, it just adds to the drama of who does the best job of bringing their console to market, with the best product lineup and getting there without alot of hiccups.
From a personal standpoint, I will not be purchasing a PS3 anytime soon. While I love playing videogames, I am not in any hurry to pluck down around $600.00 for a game console, no matter what it is able to do. Nor do I relish the thought of standing on lines with a lottery ticket that does not necessarily guarantee me an actual console purchase. I’ll leave that to all you other die hards. have fun.
Sorry about This!
September 6, 2006 at 9:30 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentA whole weekend and I didn’t get the chance to really check out anything in the gaming world. I will be doing another post here later today so stay tuned…..
